Question: I stopped smoking five months ago. However I have crazy cravings to smoke. Is this normal?
Answer: The urge to smoke may occur several months after smoking cessation. In general, these desires disappear on their own in 3-5 minutes. So better to wait and deal with diversionary activities (eating or drinking something, go for walk etc.).
Aggressiveness
Question: I live with a smoker who is extremely aggressive when he tries to quit, he tries stop smoking every time he gets sick with acute bronchitis (every 5 months). What medicine can help him?
Response Dr.JP Humair, tobacco specialist physician at the Cantonal Hospital of Geneva: If your spouse loses his composure when he stops smoking, there are two reasons for it:
1. It is a nicotine withdrawal and weaning makes a person irritable. The solution is to take either a nicotine patch or gum or lozenges and by decreasing the dose very gradually to stop smoking completely, for example for two or three months.
2.If a person hasn’t made the decision of giving up smoking himself or he made it unexpectedly. The planning of this decision would be preferable for better acceptance and will make the more favorable prognosis.
