We know that 20-25% of alcoholics are infected with hepatitis C, but we do not know how they were contaminated. Forty percent of hepatitis C cases in California have no risk factor as blood transfusions, administration of intravenous drugs or sexual contact with the virus. We do know that drug addicts who use intravenous drugs are reservoirs of hepatitis C, which gives a dimension to the problem which we have never had to consider so far. Throughout California, the presence of these infections is very troubling, and we do not know where we stand.
